Two Additional Walk-Ons Joining Georgetown Roster
Georgetown is now set to have five walk-on players this season.
In addition to the three walk-ons already set to be on Georgetown’s 2023-24 roster, Hilltop Hoops has learned that two other players will be joining the roster this season as walk-ons.
Austin Montgomery and Cam Bacote are the two additional players that will be on the roster this year as walk-ons. They will join Donovan Grant, Jon Kazor, and Hashem Asad as the walk-ons on this year’s team.
Montgomery, a 6-foot-5 wing from New Orleans, was listed as a member of LSU’s 2022-23 roster last season as a walk-on, but his LSU bio notes that he “did not participate with the team in the 2022-23 season”.
Bacote, a 6-foot-3 guard from Hampton, Virginia, has played the last two seasons at Western Carolina. Prior to that, he played at Indiana State, and before that, Maryland-Eastern Shore during the 2017-18 season.
With Montgomery and Bacote joining the team, that gives Georgetown nine scholarship players and five walk-on players, an unusual ratio.
Before coming to LSU last season, Montgomery graduated from Newman High School in New Orleans, where he averaged 11.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game as a senior. Before that, he spent three years at Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama.
Bacote played in only six games last year at Western Carolina in an injury-shortened season. Prior to that, during the 2021-22 season, he started 28 games, averaging 8.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. He averaged 29.5 minutes per game in his first season at Western Carolina.
The Hampton, Virginia native attended Bethel High School, Allen Iverson’s alma mater. Iverson, unsurprisingly, is Bacote’s favorite player. Georgetown associate head coach Ivan Thomas has known Bacote and his family for years, and was the driving force behind Bacote coming to Georgetown.
So why is Georgetown loading up on the walk-ons this year?
In talking to folks around the team, the Hoyas are bringing in these players primarily so that they have enough numbers to practice during the season. With only nine scholarship players on the roster at the moment, Georgetown is going to need to keep its roster as fresh and as healthy as it can during the season, and these players will help with that.
