Fairfield Center Supreme Cook Commits to Georgetown
Georgetown finally gets a starting-caliber big man, overcoming a Big East rival to land Supreme Cook from Fairfield
Drew McKenna was supposed to be the lone highlight of the day for Georgetown. But then, 20-25 minutes before McKenna announced his decision, it came out that Supreme Cook had committed to Georgetown, a somewhat surprising move considering there had been no public links between Cook and Georgetown before that, despite an obvious mutual fit between Cook and the Hoyas.
Cook, a 6-foot-9 center from East Orange, NJ, has played the last three years at Fairfield University, a small Jesuit university in Fairfield, CT. Last season, as a junior, Cook averaged 13.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks per game and shot 54.5% from the field.
In Cook, Ed Cooley has nabbed a center who fits the mold of the big men that have excelled for Cooley at Providence, such as Ed Croswell, Nate Watson, and Ben Bentil. Cook is a back-to-the-basket player who started showing signs of a midrange jumper last season as a junior.
While not known as an elite defender, Cook moves well at 6-foot-9, and has surprising athleticism that shows up in spurts. He is not known for his shot-blocking skills, having only averaged 1.1 blocks per 40 minutes last season as a junior, but he is adequate on the defensive end.
Cook led a very quiet recruitment while in the transfer portal, and many expected him to end up at Seton Hall. Georgetown intensified its pursuit of Cook in the last week, however, and quickly arranged for him to come to campus for a visit. After that, Cook made the decision to become a Hoya. NIL did play a part in Cook coming to Georgetown, to be sure.
As part of last night’s Twitter Space on Hilltop Hoops, we had Fairfield Frank, a former Fairfield Stags Men’s Basketball Manager and current avid Fairfield basketball fan, join the Space to discuss Supreme Cook and his game. You can listen to the Space here to hear more from Frank about what Supreme Cook is bringing to the Hilltop, as well as his thoughts on Ed Cooley, who he worked with while at Fairfield on the men’s basketball staff.
The commitment of Cook gives Georgetown two scholarship roster spots left to fill for this upcoming season, with the possibility of leaving one roster spot open still the likely course of action that Georgetown takes.
North Carolina sophomore guard D’Marco Dunn began a visit to Georgetown yesterday, as reported first by Hilltop Hoops, and it’s expected that Georgetown will focus its efforts on bringing in another guard with its 12th roster spot.
