Sources: Ronny Thompson No Longer With Georgetown Men's Basketball
Georgetown basketball's Chief of Staff since 2017 will not be continuing with the program under Ed Cooley.
Ronny Thompson, Georgetown Men’s Basketball Chief of Staff under Patrick Ewing, is no longer employed by the program and will not be a part of new Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley’s incoming staff, according to multiple Georgetown sources.
Thompson, the son of John Thompson Jr. and brother of John Thompson III, has drawn criticism in recent years both publicly and privately for his heavy-handed approach in managing many aspects of the men’s basketball program at Georgetown. Thompson was widely considered as the right-hand man to Patrick Ewing during Ewing’s six-year tenure as Georgetown head coach.
Georgetown did not publicly list Thompson as an employee of the team until Fall 2022, a move that came after a February 2022 piece from Hilltop Hoops detailing Thompson’s role with the program.
Questions were raised about Thompson’s role with the program during the Ewing Era when Thompson, who would often spend every Georgetown home game standing towards the tunnel entrance behind the Georgetown bench, would also appear as a color analyst or studio host for NBC Sports’ coverage of A-10 games, sometimes even on the same day as Georgetown games.
Thompson, who played for the Hoyas as a walk-on from 1988-1992, joined his father’s staff as an assistant coach in 1998, John Thompson Jr.’s final season as head coach.
Ronny then served as the lead assistant for Craig Esherick from 1999-2003, before leaving for an assistant job at Arkansas in 2003, and poaching Esherick’s top recruit, Darian Townes, and taking him with him to Arkansas.
Thompson was eventually named head coach at Ball State in 2006, and flamed out quickly. After a 9-22 record in his first season, Ball State’s administration accused Thompson and his staff of breaking NCAA rules by being at voluntary offseason team workouts.
Thompson would later claim that notes including racial slurs and insults were slipped under the office doors of Thompson and other staff members.
Thompson was fired after one season at Ball State, and has not served in a coaching role since.
With Thompson gone, Ed Cooley continues to finalize the full coaching and support staff that will be joining him at Georgetown.
Jeff Battle, Ivan Thomas, Brian Blaney, and LaDontae Henton have all been confirmed as being a part of Cooley’s staff, although the titles of each individual have not been announced yet. Each coach was previously a part of Cooley’s staff at Providence.
Best news of the day, and maybe even the best news of the offseason so far.
