Georgetown Looks to Seal the Deal With Isaiah Miranda, as a Commitment Decision Gets Closer
Can the Hoyas pull off another impressive recruiting win in the Class of 2023? An answer could be coming soon.
Despite their continued focus on the Class of 2024, Georgetown is still involved with recruiting the Class of 2023, namely, Isaiah Miranda.
Miranda, a 7-foot-1 center from Rhode Island who will be playing for Southern California Academy this season, is ranked #20 overall in the country for 2023.
The list of suitors for Miranda reflects his elite status as a prospect. Miranda took an official visit to Georgetown earlier this summer, and has also visited UConn (multiple times, unofficially), Kentucky (official), UCLA (unofficial), and USC (official). Recently, Miranda has also been offered by Louisville and Oregon, and has drawn interest from North Carolina too.
Georgetown has been all over Miranda this summer, with Patrick Ewing or an assistant being present at a majority of the events that Miranda has played at, including at NY2LA, which saw Miranda go up against recent Michigan State commit Xavier Booker.
With Georgetown landing its top guard target in 2023, they have shifted their efforts to Miranda, who has become the top priority for Georgetown.
For a 7-foot-1 center, Miranda’s blend of length, quickness, and athleticism gives his game a unicorn-like feel to it. Defensively, Miranda is an elite rim protector, but his offensive ability may be the most exciting part about his game.
Miranda has the ability to play inside or out, and has the shown the ability to face up and attack his man off the dribble when he has a favorable matchup. His three-point shot is also promising, which bodes well for his prospects of making the NBA, which he has made clear is his priority in interviews with the media.
Miranda has also spoken about wanting to team up with Marvel Allen in college, which bodes well for the Hoyas’ chances here.
Within the walls of the TAC, the Georgetown coaching staff is confident of their chances of landing Miranda, but is also aware that there is work still to do to get this one across the finish line. This one isn’t in the bag yet, as much as they would like it to be.
Oregon looms as a threat in the Miranda sweepstakes, especially considering Oregon was one of three schools that Miranda listed as a dream school growing up, along with UNC (has not offered) and UCLA (has offered).
While Georgetown can offer Miranda the chance to pair up with Allen, Oregon just received a commitment from KJ Evans, the #7 overall player in 2023. Oregon can pitch the ability to team up with Evans, a 6-foot-9 forward, to make one of the longest and most athletic frontcourt pairings in the country. Those two together would be a mismatch nightmare for opponents to deal with.
If Georgetown misses out on Miranda, it won’t be for lack of trying. The Hoyas have been consistent with Miranda for a while now, and he has clearly taken note, saying, “The whole Georgetown staff is awesome. Every time we talk it’s all love and jokes. I feel really comfortable with those guys.”
Interestingly enough, Georgetown assistant coach Clinton Crouch had an eyebrow-raising interaction on Twitter on Sunday with Julius Von Hanzlik, the head coach at Southern California Academy, where Miranda is transferring into this season.
A source familiar with Miranda’s recruitment indicates that a commitment decision will be coming from Miranda “very soon”, so the finish line appears to be in sight. With AAU season over, and Miranda having taken an official to the Hilltop already, the Hoyas likely won’t see Miranda in-person again before he makes his decision. They are essentially in wait-and-see mode now.
Getting Marvel Allen is one thing, but if Georgetown associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Kevin Nickelberry can reel in Miranda too, that would be nothing short of a grand slam for Georgetown in its 2023 recruiting class. We’ll find out soon if Nickelberry can work his magic again.
If you had to place a Crystal Ball, who would you put it in for at this point?
