Georgetown Recruiting Trail Updates
Aminu Mohammed is announcing his decision on the 21st, but where do the Hoyas stand with several other 2021 and 2022 prospects?
With the college basketball season in full swing, recruiting has taken a backseat in the past couple months, with the exception of Aminu Mohammed, who is committing on Monday. With Georgetown having a week off in between their two games against St. John’s, the recruiting hot stove has warmed up a bit this week.
Here’s what you’ve missed in the last couple of weeks when it comes to the Hoyas’ effort on the recruiting trail.
Aminu Mohammed, 2021, Wing
Rivals writers have been scrambling to get their FutureCast predictions in to be able to claim that they had the Aminu Mohammed commitment news first. This week has seen Rob Cassidy, a national Rivals reporter, and Anthony Dasher, Rivals’ UGA reporter, join Dan McDonald (based in Georgia) as entering in FutureCast predictions for Mohammed to Georgia.
While Georgia is certainly a top contender to land Mohammed, Mohammed’s guardian Shawn Harmon told me today, “No communication has been made to any coaches,” so while speculation of Mohammed to Georgia is running rampant this week, it is no done deal by any means, and any signal from Georgia’s staff that they have landed Mohammed is just speculation on their part.
From Georgetown’s perspective, the staff continues to be confident in their chances at landing their first five-star recruit since Patrick Ewing took over. While nothing is set in stone, there is confidence within the program that they have as good a chance as any school at getting Mohammed. They have certainly put in the work to get this far, and now, we will see if they can finally get over the hump and reel in their first five-star recruit of the Ewing era.
Khalil Brantley, 2021, Point Guard
While the Hoyas continue to pursue Mohammed, they are also still in contact with a couple of point guards in the Class of 2021. If Georgetown whiffs on Mohammed, it seems likely that they will pivot to bringing in another point guard in the 2021 class, based on who else they have recently been in contact with.
Khalil Brantley is a 6’0”, 165-pound point guard from Brooklyn who is one of the top scorers in the New York City area. A similar player to current Hoya freshman Dante Harris, Brantley is on the smaller side for a point guard, but has impressive ball control ability, and plays with pace and energy from start to finish. He’s got some New York dawg in him.
Georgetown has been involved with Brantley for a while, and Brantley mentioned Georgetown as one of four schools that are pursuing him the most right now, according to the following post.
While it’s hard to see Brantley coming to Georgetown to be a backup to Harris for three years, the Hoyas have maintained a strong relationship with Brantley for a while now, and clearly see him as being a good fit for their program. He is one player to watch if Georgetown’s pursuit of Mohammed falls through.
Cyncier Harrison, 2021, Point Guard
While Georgetown has yet to offer Harrison, Jake Lieberman of Zags Blog reported last week that Georgetown is one of three schools currently showing interest in Harrison, a 5-foot-11 point guard from Charlotte, North Carolina.
Based on Georgetown’s lack of an offer here, and their continued interest in Brantley, Harrison appears to be a Plan C-type option, if the Hoyas miss out on Mohammed and Brantley both.
D’Ante Bass, 2022, Wing
Georgetown continues to offer a lot of high-ceiling wing prospects in the Class of 2022, and the 6’7” Bass certainly fits that mold. Bass, who was offered yesterday by Georgetown, is ranked 232nd in the Class of 2022 by 247Sports, but has the highlights of a five-star recruit.
Like 2021 Georgetown signee Jordan Riley, Bass is a freakishly explosive athlete who excels in the open court. With his size and frame, Bass can overpower many high school defenders simply by brute strength, but also displays strong ball-handling ability, and a pretty jump shot.
Bass was offered in August by Tom Crean and Georgia, so the Hoyas may be in for another battle for a talented recruit with the Bulldogs. As things currently stand, Georgia and Georgetown are the only schools to have offered Bass, who is from Savannah, Georgia.
This could be an under-the-radar recruitment to monitor, with how talented Bass is. Expect him to explode onto the scene eventually, and for the Hoyas to have some tough competition for his commitment.
