With Georgetown assistant coaches Akbar Waheed and Robert Kirby having been let go this weekend by Georgetown, Patrick Ewing now has two holes on his coaching staff to fill, as he looks to save his coaching career at Georgetown in a pivotal sixth year.
Georgetown made no announcement regarding the departures of Waheed and Kirby, not even a thank you for their time spent with the program, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them stay mum on any potential new additions.
Here is what I’ve heard about the coaching staff in the last few days.
In addition to Waheed and Kirby, analytics coordinator Navreet Dhaliwal was also let go by Georgetown. Dhaliwal began as a student manager with the team, and was then promoted to analytics coordinator after his final season as a student manager with the team. This was his fourth season as the team’s analytics coordinator.
While Georgetown had reached out to former assistant coach Kevin Broadus about a possible return, Broadus is unlikely to re-join the Georgetown staff at this time. Things can always change, especially if Georgetown were to really up their pursuit, but that is where things currently stand. Broadus is currently the head coach at Morgan State.
The belief among other coaches at both the college and high school levels is that Georgetown is looking to “keep it in the family” with whoever it adds onto the staff. I would not be surprised if now-former URI head coach David Cox received a call from the Hilltop about a possible reunion. Could Georgetown make an outside hire? Yes. But at this point, that does not appear to be their first option.
While Louis Orr will be staying on as part of Ewing’s staff, there is a good possibility that Orr will be given a new title/role within the program. What that title is could depend on who else joins the staff in the coming weeks. Orr’s friendship with Ewing, dating back to their days as teammates with the New York Knicks, certainly played a role in Orr surviving the staff cuts, but Orr’s relationship with elite 2023 prospect G.G. Jackson couldn’t have hurt his chances to stay on board for next season.
Note: With Frank Martin being fired at South Carolina on Monday, the door is open for Georgetown to make a renewed push for Jackson, a Columbia, SC native. Word on the street is that Jackson’s father is a big fan of his son attending UNC, while his mother strongly prefers Georgetown. I would not feel optimistic yet as a Georgetown fan, but this recruitment does bear monitoring now, and Orr figures to factor in here. Jackson said in a Monday interview with 247Sports that he is looking to announce his decision in April.
Georgetown special assistant Clinton Crouch is a candidate to be elevated to full-time assistant coach on the Georgetown staff, and there are those in DMV circles that believe he has the inside track. However, no final decision has been made yet.
I support elevating Coach Crouch, he has had a positive impact since arriving.
