Dontrez Styles Enters Transfer Portal
Following the commitment of Micah Peavy to Georgetown, Styles has decided to leave after one season as a Hoya.
Georgetown junior wing Dontrez Styles has decided to enter the transfer portal, according to Joe Tipton of On3 Sports. After transferring from North Carolina, Styles averaged 12.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in his lone season at Georgetown. The 6-foot-6 junior will have one year of eligibility remaining.
Styles got off to a strong start last season as a Hoya, scoring 20+ points in three of his first six games. But his play fluctuated during conference play, scoring single digits in seven out of 21 Big East games (including postseason play) and only scoring more than 15 points in four out of 21 games.
Styles averaged 15.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in non-conference play, on 45/40/76 shooting splits, but his averages took a hit in conference play, where he went down to averaging 11.6 points and 5.4 rebounds on 42/35/79 shooting splits.
Styles’ exit from Georgetown comes less than 48 hours after the addition of TCU wing Micah Peavy to Georgetown’s roster.
While Styles’ departure was not certain— or expected— at the beginning of the offseason, the program is rumored to have a replacement identified already at Styles’ position, and they could move fast.
Currently, Georgetown has Peavy and two freshmen, Drew McKenna and Caleb Williams, on its depth chart at the wing position.
The performance of McKenna, a redshirt freshman who has been practicing with the team since January, has drawn rave reviews in particular from those who have been at team practices. The Maryland native is expected to be a key contributor for next year’s team, and was going to compete with Styles for minutes on the wing.
Gotta say, I'm not convinced next year will be any better based on who is coming and who is going so far.
