Don Carey and Collin Holloway Enter Transfer Portal
Georgetown now has had six players enter the transfer portal from last season's roster, as roster continuity continues to be a major issue for Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas.
Georgetown announced on Thursday night that senior guard Don Carey and sophomore forward Collin Holloway are entering the transfer portal, bringing the total numbers of players from the 2021-22 Georgetown roster that have entered the transfer portal so far this offseason to six.
A carefully-worded statement sent out by Georgetown concluded with the following: “Carey remains fully dedicated to the NBA draft process. Both Carey and Holloway have elected to keep their options open, including continuing their careers at Georgetown or at another institution.”
Carey, the first captain named under Patrick Ewing and the winner of this year’s Big East Sportsmanship Award, has one year of eligibility left thanks to his COVID bonus year. Holloway, who started 20 of 28 games this season, will have three years of eligibility left.
The news of Carey— who already declared for the NBA Draft— entering the transfer portal comes as a mild surprise. The Upper Marlboro, Maryland native averaged 13.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in his second season on the Hilltop, and was second on the team in both points and assists per game.
Holloway’s entry into the transfer portal comes as less of a surprise. The Louisiana native had been rumored to being on the fence for a while about returning to Georgetown for his junior season, despite starting a majority of the team’s games as a sophomore, and averaging the fifth-most shots per game on the team, at 6.8.
Certainly, judging by social media posts made by some members of his family this season expressing frustration, one could see that there was some level of discontent there at different points this season. Now, Holloway will get a chance to find out if the grass is indeed greener on the other side, or if it makes sense to return to Georgetown for Year Three.
While the program wasn’t counting on Carey to return next season, they had expressed to the team captain that he would be welcomed back at Georgetown if he did choose to continue his collegiate career. That he instead chose to enter the transfer portal has to sting a little bit for Patrick Ewing and his program, even if Carey were to wind up eventually exiting the transfer portal and coming back to Georgetown.
If neither Carey nor Holloway returns next season, Georgetown will now have four open scholarship spots for next season. If Aminu Mohammed stays in the NBA Draft, that number would rise to five.
Georgetown could very possibly open next season with only two active players returning from the roster that it ended this past season with: Dante Harris and Ryan Mutombo. Jordan Riley and Wayne Bristol Jr. weren’t on the active roster to close the season, and the roster status of Malcolm Wilson for next season is unclear at this time. No matter how you want to slice it, roster continuity continues to be a major Achilles heel for Patrick Ewing at Georgetown.
With the number of open spots on the roster only growing right now, the pressure is picking up on the Georgetown coaching staff to land a couple more names in the transfer portal soon. Tyrell Ward’s commitment announcement on Saturday at 4 PM ET looms large, as well.
