LSU Transfer Brandon Murray Commits to Georgetown
The Hoyas land one of the top transfers on the market in Brandon Murray, a Baltimore native who gives Georgetown a new #1 scoring option next season.
Georgetown has made its first significant roster addition of the offseason, with former LSU Tiger and Baltimore native Brandon Murray committing to Georgetown.
Murray, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, averaged 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game as a freshman at LSU. A member of this year’s SEC All-Freshman Team, Murray chose Georgetown over Illinois and Tennessee.
The commitment of Murray is the first major win for new Georgetown assistant coach Kevin Nickelberry, who coached Murray at LSU. Murray was far and away Georgetown’s top transfer target, and the Hoyas sealed the deal with their top target in large part due to Nickelberry’s past relationship with Murray. Of course, the Hoyas also recruited Murray out of high school, when he attended Baltimore Polytechnic, and that prior connection didn’t hurt either.
With Murray in the fold, Georgetown will continue to work on adding further impact talent to its roster for next season. The staff has been clear in making Efton Reid a top target at the center position, and has also reached out to former LSU Tigers Julian Phillips, Alex Fudge, and Mwani Wilkinson.
Pulling in Reid will be a more difficult task, if the rumors about the NIL deals he has been offered by other schools already are true. If Reid goes elsewhere, the staff has several other options to turn to as it looks to remake its depth chart at the center position.
With Aminu Mohammed testing the NBA waters, and Don Carey not likely to return to Georgetown, Murray will step in immediately as the top scoring option on Georgetown next season. The broad-shouldered shooting guard has a great blend of size, skill, and explosion, and finishes with authority at the rim. As the focal point of the Georgetown offense, Murray has All-Big East potential right away.
In addition to his offensive potential, Murray is a high-level defender who will bring a much-needed edge to the Georgetown defense, one that was lacking capable perimeter defenders last year.
According to EvanMiya.com, Murray was the 11th-best player in the portal. 247Sports had Murray ranked as #1 overall. Either way, it’s an incredible recruiting win for Georgetown.
Murray’s commitment is significant not just in terms of what it means for the talent on the roster, but also for what it means for Georgetown’s recruiting moving forward. You don’t sell a top transfer on coming to a team that went 0-19 in the Big East without surrounding him with other impact talent. The Hoyas are not done yet in the transfer portal.
