Hoyas Akok'd: Akok Akok Transfers from Georgetown
After a summer of speculation, Akok has finally made the jump into the transfer portal.
Georgetown forward Akok Akok has decided to enter the transfer portal, capping off a summer that has been filled with rumors of Akok possibly transferring since early May. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 6.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game last season in his first year as a Hoya.
The news was first officially reported by Trilly Donovan early Friday morning.
As reported here last weekend, significant uncertainty has lingered around the status of Akok for weeks, and that only intensified last week after Akok was not pictured in workouts with the team.
West Virginia, who have been aggressive over the last month in reaching out to talented centers and offering very lucrative NIL packages to try and entice them to enter the portal, have been eyeing Akok for weeks, and will be at or near the front of the line for Akok’s talents this time around.
Akok’s departure leaves Georgetown extremely thin for depth in the frontcourt, with Fairfield transfer Supreme Cook now the runaway favorite to start at center for Georgetown.
Behind Cook on the depth chart is only Ryan Mutombo, who has played sparingly in his first two years at Georgetown, and Drew Fielder, an incoming freshman who may be better suited playing at the 4 behind Kansas State transfer Ismael Massoud.
According to sources, West Virginia had indeed offered Akok a bigger NIL package than what he was getting at Georgetown. However, Akok wanted a certain figure to enter the portal, and WVU wasn’t giving him the exact number he wanted, which is why this situation has been fluid for several weeks now.
Now, Akok has made his move, having officially submitted his request to transfer from the university in the last 24 hours.
With less than three months to go until the regular season, Georgetown finds itself with a very short roster numbers-wise, and with very little depth at the center position. Depending on the status of Drew McKenna, the Hoyas currently only have nine scholarship players on their roster - ten if McKenna gains eligibility in time for the fall semester.
According to one source, Georgetown is expected to look at bringing in a new center, but options are limited at this stage and it’s no guarantee that Georgetown is able to bring someone in.
Mac Etienne (UCLA) and Malcolm Dandridge (Memphis) are two centers that are still in the portal, although both appear far enough along in their decision-making process that it is likely too late for the Hoyas to jump in the race, if they wanted to.
Georgetown could also opt to look overseas to bolster the center position on its roster.
Welcome to college basketball in the NIL era: The portal giveth, and the portal taketh away.
This team's gonna get smashed on the boards this season. I see them unfortunately playing Fielder a lot at C. Ryan Mutombo's a wasted legacy scholarship and you can't depend on him. Who knows how good Supreme Cook even is at this level?
Even if it's for a lowly grad transfer with 5 fouls, Cooley needs to find someone pronto.
Appreciate your reporting on this. Others offer pros and cons, but I liked Akok and thought he would be a valuable contributor this year. Wish him the best.
