2024 4-Star Wing Drew McKenna Commits to Georgetown
Georgetown picks up another commitment from a four-star recruit, this time a local product from Maryland.
Drew McKenna, a 6-foot-9 small forward from Ellicott City, Maryland ranked #58 overall in the Class of 2024 according to 247Sports’ Composite Ranking, has announced his commitment to Georgetown and head coach Ed Cooley.
McKenna, per multiple sources, is expected to reclassify into the Class of 2023, which will give Georgetown their second recruit in the Class of 2023, alongside four-star PF/C Drew Fielder.
The Hoyas beat out Xavier and Butler, who were also listed by McKenna in his top three schools with Georgetown. Ed Cooley and his staff made McKenna their first call to a high school recruit when they got to Georgetown, and moved aggressively to bring McKenna onboard shortly after.
With Georgetown building its roster with an eye towards 2024, the option to reclassify for McKenna became a bigger possibility as Georgetown began to fill its roster out and identify what remaining positions of need exist on the roster heading into this season and beyond. There have been discussions about McKenna taking a redshirt in his first year at Georgetown to allow him to focus on his development in his first year, but no final determination has been made yet.
McKenna, who plays for Team Loaded, and before that, Team Melo, projects to be a starting-caliber scoring forward who can stretch the floor and score off the dribble as he improves his ball-handling skills. At 6-foot-9, McKenna has the versatility to play on the perimeter or go down low when guarded by smaller defenders. Defensively, McKenna has the ability to guard positions 2-4 on the floor, and with his length, should be a disruptive player on that end of the court.
With McKenna likely to reclassify, Georgetown will now have three scholarship spots left to fill for this season. As previously reported here, the coaching staff is unlikely to fill every spot, so look for the Hoyas to only be adding 1-2 more players before their 2023-24 roster is set.
Out of curiosity, what is the advantage of reclassifying and redshirting? Why not graduate from high school with your class?
Who are his assistants? Any local young coaches. Eddie Saah
